Google launches Gemini in Chrome with persistent assistant and shopping tools

Google has launched its Gemini assistant in Chrome for Windows, macOS and Chromebook Plus devices in the United States, the company said.

Built on Gemini 3, the update introduces a persistent side panel assistant, new integrations with Google apps, and features such as auto browse and Personal Intelligence.

Google said the side panel remains visible across tabs and can assist with tasks including comparing products, summarising reviews and managing calendar items.

Chrome now includes Nano Banana image transformation in the side panel, enabling users to edit images without downloading or re-uploading files.

The auto browse feature, available in preview for Google AI Pro and Google AI Ultra subscribers, can complete multi-step tasks, use Google Password Manager for log-ins with user permission, and apply Gemini 3’s multimodal capabilities to identify and purchase items online.

Chrome will also support Google’s Universal Commerce Protocol, an open standard developed with partners including Shopify, Etsy, Wayfair and Target, the company said.

Google added that Personal Intelligence will launch in Chrome in the coming months as an opt-in feature, allowing users to connect or disconnect apps at any time.
