Futures Lab students build AI prototypes for learning Japanese and sign-language practice

The two projects translate classroom problems into applied tools: the story generator creates customised reading material to match a learner's level and interests, and the sign-language tutor monitors practice and returns immediate feedback to the user.

Both prototypes were developed by students participating in the Futures Lab program and are presented as functioning demonstrations rather than finished products.

The work offers a concrete example of campus research moving from concept to usable experiments in education and accessibility, and it highlights the kinds of applied projects emerging from a Google-funded partnership with the University of Waterloo.
