An unnamed senior White House official told reporters the administration views the issue as ongoing work that could require measures beyond the executive order signed last month.
The order established a voluntary review process for AI models and, National Cyber Director Sean Cairncross said during a July 2 briefing on the rollout, includes provisions for open-source scanning and deconfliction.
“We cannot achieve the president’s vision without securing and bolstering our open-source ecosystem,” Cairncross said.
Administration officials framed the moves as an effort to shore up the nascent US open-source industry amid worries it is losing ground to China.
Firms like Reflection AI have recently pitched the Trump administration on a new framework for open-source models, a development that Semafor said has prompted discussion inside the White House about potential follow-up guidance or further executive steps.
